Product Description

Samsung's SV5000W is an internationally oriented four-head VCR. The SV5000W is definitely worth considering if videos and international travel o travelers are a big part of your life. The silver cabinet is attractive, with a center video slot and display, shuttle jog and a vertical row of control buttons on the left, and inputs and several more controls on the right. This VCR manages to be compatible with inputs and outputs used all over the world by digitally converting the signal format of the tape into the format desired. NTSC, PAL, and SECAM formats can all be accommodated for recording and playback. Slow motion, still, and frame advance are available, and skip and scan can also be utilized during playback. Digital auto tracking helps ensure high-quality playback.

Summary

I bought this VCR so that my sister in Britain could send me videos of British TV. I was a little concerned to read some reports that the conversion in this VCR made the picture poorer quality than with a standalone converter. But I needn't have worried. The picture looks fine to me, it's as good as I get US network TV. It is an expensive VCR - but worth it to get my fix of Brit TV.

Strength

Easy to watch British PAL video tapes on a US NTSC TV. I could connect my British PAL video camera, watch them on US standard TV and copy them onto US tapes.

Weakness

The provision of multiple inputs/output standards makes it a little more complicated to use than a normal VCR. Before I got used to the equipment I accidentally recorded a US netwrok TV transmission as being European PAL and it was unwatchable. But it was my mistake. Why does the feature of watching foreign tapes have to be so expensive? Most British VCR's will play US tapes - even inexpensive VCR's. But this seemed to be the least expensive product that does it in the USA that I could find.
