Summary

2007 Dodge Caliber The latest crossover vehicle - not a car, not a truck, not a mini van, not an SUV - OK - it's a station wagon (remember those?) based on the improved Neon, according to Bettega the resident automotive expert so that makes...

Strength

Looks nice

Weakness

Underpowered, loud, hard plastic corners in interior, poor handling

Bottom Line

A new model. If you like the quasi car/truck type station wagon, wait a model year or two until they work the bugs out.

Summary

First some background information. I made a reservations for a compact rental car for 4 days in Seattle, WA. Upon arrival the rental company upgraded me at no charge to a larger vehicle, a Dodge Caliber Hatchback. They told me it was a 5-door...

Strength

Reasonable seating for 5 in a pinch

Weakness

Noisy, Noisy, Noisy. Everything else is mediocre or less.

Bottom Line

I would never buy this vehicle and if it were given to me, I'd sell it and buy something else.

Summary

A dozen years ago word was that Chrysler had taught the Japanese a thing or two by giving the then-new Neon a healthy dose of style and a very low $8,995 base price. It seemed that an American company could still create a viable small car. Sales were...

Strength

Unique, functional interior, fuel economy ratings, low price compared to Vibe/Matrix

Weakness

Many will not care for the styling, driving position, cheap interior

Bottom Line

I find the unique mixture of attributes intriguing, but am put off by the driving position and interior materials.

Summary

My Experience Can you remember the last time Dodge was considered a major player in the compact market? Unless you recall the buzz surrounding the 1995 Neon, chances are that the answer is “no.” Dodge, like most domestic automakers,...

Strength

Baby-Ram styling, clever interior features, low base price, hatchback versatility.

Weakness

Vague steering, excessive road noise, cheap interior materials, poor visibility, Prius-grade acceleration.

Bottom Line

Like Saturn's ill-fated compact, the Caliber has a strong basic platform, but feels hastily designed and "unfinished." Unless styling is your primary concern, there are better choices.

Summary

In the small car market, the Dodge Neon had marginal success, but never lived up to its initial expectations. When it arrived in the mid 1990's, there was much pomp and circumstance, but it could not compete with vehicles such as the Toyota...

Strength

Interesting, Great Stereo, Decent Ride

Weakness

Cramped rear seats, Blind Spots

Bottom Line

This is a unique family car, that might be a good fit for some.

Summary

Man, did I score BIG points this Mother's Day! We have been a one car family for...well...forever. It was - and still is - my 1

Chevy Cavalier. With the advent of kindergarten for Syd and Sam's playdates, we...

Strength

Affordable, fun to drive, just north of pragmatic, well-made.

Weakness

Not many bells and whistles to entertain gadget-junkies.

Bottom Line

In a time of tightening finances, overcrowded roadways, and soaring crude, the 2007 Dodge Caliber is as smart a purchase as you can make.

I travel a fair amount for business. One of the unexpected perks of doing this is that I get to test drive a lot of different vehicles. Granted, they're usually the base model of any car, but in that way I get to see what the car, in its' most basic...

Strength

Cargo capacity

Weakness

Roof slope, cheap materials, underpowered, visibility

Bottom Line

I can't recommend the Caliber because of visibility issues and lack of power

Summary

INTRODUCTION AND INTERIOR I drove the Dodge Caliber SXT with the 1.8 liter engine and the 5-speed manual transmission. Despite some areas of concern, the competition may not be able to DODGE a shot of this high CALIBER. Although the interior has...

Strength

rugged, unique, upscale styling starting under $14,000, smooth ride, might be quiet without hubcaps

Weakness

poor visibility, abrupt clutch actuation, lazy throttle response, loud at high revs

Bottom Line

Despite a few minor misfires, the Dodge Caliber has the competition in its crosshairs with its affordability and compelling exterior and interior design elements.

Summary

The all new 2007 Dodge Caliber combines the exterior styling cues of an SUV with the apparent roof profile of a sport coupe. It is a five door hatchback that avoids looking like a station wagon or economy car. It works in real life, much better than in...

Strength

Innovative, aggressive styling, thoroughly modern engines and safety options, compliant ride, unique interior features

Weakness

CVT lacks immediate kick, rear seat leg room, noisier than some competitors,

Bottom Line

Recommended. Caliber offers SUV-like interior flexibility with more car-like fuel efficiency at the expense of some kick in the pants off the line. The Caliber offers stand-out styling and features.
