CX-7: Mazda Lets Passion Go To Its Head

Summary

Background Since introducing its two-parts-infectious, one-part-obnoxious “zoom-zoom” ad campaign in 2000, Mazda has done an unusually thorough job of walking its marketing talk. Starting with the Mazda 6 in 2003, and followed by the...

Strength

Relatively sharp steering and handling, nicely detailed interior, looks more expensive than it is.

Weakness

Square-peg turbo engine, lazy transmission, offers no more utility than a conventional sport wagon.

Bottom Line

While its handling is good for a couple grins, the CX-7 is essentially a style product. It'll sell on looks, because as an SUV, it's conspicuously short on utility.

Victim of high expectations

Summary

Now normally I don't expect much out of SUVs and tend to evaluate their performance much more leniently than I do cars. But I've been hearing so much about how the CX-7 would totally change my expectations for how an SUV should handle that I went ahead...

Strength

Interior styling, handling compared to other SUVs, price

Weakness

Tire squeal, gets clumsy when pushed, boost lag

Bottom Line

Falls short of the hype. But good value, if not great handling, for the price.

Summary

This review is based on a couple of days in a loner vehicle..I own a MPV and the the dealer couldn't get to an oil change on the first day, then had to order a new door latch, so I have had two days in a base model CX-7 around town and highway commuting...

Strength

acceleration, handling, price per content

Weakness

turbo lag, drinks premium, visibility, uncomfortable seats

Bottom Line

Recommended with reservations. Give it a long test drive and make sure it fits your needs.

Summary

We own the vehicle for a week. We leased it because of its handling and the financial incentive from Mazda. The loosers in our search for a family wagon are: Honda Fit (go figure), Honda CR-V - it seemed dangerously slow getting on the freeway, Toyota...

Strength

Excellent handling, feels solid, fast acceleration, can make use of better gas (91)

Weakness

The interior lacks function, some cheap plastic; instrument panel is invisible during sunny days

Bottom Line

Buy it for 1. Safety, 2. pleasure of driving
Reject it for 1. Lack of utility, 2.

Summary

Since deciding that our growing family will need to replace our current sedan (BMW 5 series) with a larger car that preferably has AWD, I've struggled over the past 3 months to get excited about any of the cars currently available. In this time period,...

Strength

Great value, good handling, 6-speed automatic, good performance, good audio.

Weakness

Turbo-lag, difficult to find, weak AC (new), driver seatbelt clicking (new)

Bottom Line

I recommend the CX-7 to anyone looking for a well-priced high-performance mid-size SUV. The drop from 5 to 4 stars relates to initial quality issues.

Summary

I noticed the CX7 at our local Mazda dealer a few days ago while I was picking up my wife's Mazda6 from the service bay. After a long test-drive, we now have a Red Mica CX-7 in our garage. Driving Impressions: At 3,800lbs, the CX7 is not a light...

Strength

Performance, Braking, Design, Price, Interior.

Weakness

No I-Pod jack, tires will be expensive to replace.

Bottom Line

The CX-7 is simply the best bang for your crossover buck out there. Test drive one today!

For the last 10 years I owned a Dodge Durango and then a Toyota Sequoia Limited. When gas began it's upward cycle I decided it was time to trade. I looked at several pre-owned type vehicles including the BMW 3 and Infiniti FX. My last two pre-owned...

Strength

Style, Comfort, good power and handling.

Weakness

Gas mileage disappointing, premium gas, no IPOD connection.

Bottom Line

All around competent vehicle that is comfortable with plenty of power. This is a nice step down from the SUV.

Summary

We bought the CX-7 mainly due to price and looks. We looked at the Acura RDX, Toyota Rav 4, Honda CRV and Infiniti EX. The CX-7 won due to price vs options. The only negative I have is that it is a 4 cylinder however it has 'pep'. It's my wifes car...

Strength

Style and price. The car reacts well both through acceleration and steering.

Weakness

Door handles are hard to reach from inside when doors are fully open.

Summary

Had my May 07 build CX7 Luxury since July. Enjoyed it during the winter months, when I didn't use the AC. Come summer, with temps like 30-36C (75-90F) and find that it's AC is pathetic. I've owned 9 cars in 15 years, and this car's AC would...
