Summary

I had the opportunity to audition these new headphones on an American flight to Europe this year - they are complimentary in first and business class - but they won't let you keep them!

I have never really been a Bose fan, always cautious of their huge marketing presence and dramatic claims. I have heard Bose speakers in some retail stores, but never really 'auditioned' them.

That said, I have to confess that these headphones are really great! I brought my latest pair of noise-cancelling headphones (the Sony ones) with me, but after a quick comparison, I put them away. The free Bose ones that American gave us sounded MUCH better, both for CD's and the in-flight movie (The sound quality is actually quite good from the in-flight movies, just never heard it without the background noise before).

I have tried several brands of noise-cancelling headphones in order to make flying less stressful, but none live up to these Bose ones. In fact, the Kenwood ones seemed to actually make the noise level WORSE when in the passive mode, and with it active it was the same as not using them at all... and talk about painful to wear...

What I wasn't expecting was the great sound quality these Bose headphones have. The bass in particular was outstanding, very deep and punchy. Highs were clear and open, not exaggerated. And it was nice to be able to experience 'dynamic range' on a plane! I could even hear the softest solo passages clearly.

Top of the list of strengths, however, was their comfort. I wore them for about 4 hours at a time, with no discomfort at all. In fact, it was easy to forget they were there. I have never found that of any headphones of any type before, normally after a couple of hours my ears hurt.

One small note is that unlike the other units I have tried, the electronics and batteries are in a small belt-pack type unit, about the size of a small MP3 player, so you need to have a place to put it (I put it in the seat-back pocket)

I think I will look for a set of these online, since I can't fly American everytime.

Strength

Great noise cancellation, very good sound quality, extremely comfortable

Weakness

They are pricey... but what Bose isn't?
